It’s a family affair this Love Your Local Market fortnight at Fleetwood

Unit 191 rotatedFleetwood Market is set for another successful fortnight as Love Your Local Market gets underway (17-31 May). We are pleased to be welcoming six new traders trying their hand at market trading for the first time all offering something different but adding to our extensive range of products on offer at the market.

Michael Taznier joins us selling gothic and mystical gifts. Michael had previously attended car boot sales but when he heard about the offer at Fleetwood Market thought it was definitely worth trying his hand at market trading.

Like father like son, Michael’s son George also joins the market family selling Play Station games and consoles.

Also joining us this Love Your Local Market fortnight is Eric Thompson. Visit his stall for a vast array of handbags and accessories. Eric thought the offer of trading at £10 per day was too good to miss and it was worth a shot at becoming a market trader.

Shaun Casey joins us on 23 May with his range of aromatherapy products whilst Janet Scott is selling her beautiful range of handcrafts doorstops, plaques, cushions and ragdolls. Janet says; “I’ve always wanted to try market trading and this offer has made it so easy to give it a try.”

Father and daughter partnership Patrick Greaves and Charlotte Unsworth join us with their business Little Joy Emporium selling delicious cupcakes and jars of homemade fudge. In search of a retail outlet they discovered the offer for new traders and thought it definitely worth a go.

Pop down and say hello to all our traders – old and new and bag a bargain. For more information on all our traders check out our Facebook page here.

Market Manager Julian Brent says: “The whole point of market trading is to try being self-employed with no pressure. Many large high street businesses like Marks & Spencer started their retail journey on markets.

This year we have offered an easy in easy out offer to take the risk element out of trying market trading.

Fleetwood Market is one of Lancashire’s largest markets hosting 250 indoor and outdoor stalls and is presently operating at over 90 % occupancy. We feel this is a real success story in today’s retail environment.”

Fleetwood Market is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday all year round from 9am – 4.30pm.

Love Your Local Market is a celebration of our market culture here in the UK that happens over a fortnight in May.  Over 900 markets took part last year, putting on over nearly 7,000 events.  LYLM is also all about entrepreneurship and since it started in 2012 the markets industry has pledged over 10,000 pitches to new traders.  Follow the conversation online – #LYLM2017

Easy foot in the door for new Wyre businesses

Remie BrentBudding market traders are being offered discounted stalls in Fleetwood Market to help them get their business off the ground.

As part of its priority to help kick start more new businesses, market owner Wyre Council has joined the Love Your Local Market (LYLM) campaign and will provide up to six successful applicants with discounted pitches of just £10 a day for a 6 month trial.

Love Your Local Market is a national campaign celebrating and supporting British markets and this year runs from 17 to 31 May.

Julian Brent, market manager at Wyre Council, says: “We know there are people out there with exciting business ideas but the uncertainty and cost of getting started, combined with continuity of trade beyond the first year usually proves too daunting. The Love Your Local Market offer is easy in easy out route to business and makes it simpler for anyone to have a go at being self-employed.”

Those market traders who wish to continue trading at the market after this trial period will be encouraged to do so with mentoring and support from the market manager.

For more information contact Julian Brent on 01253 887650 or email him at Julian.brent@wyre.gov.uk

Take a fresh look at Fleetwood Market Cafe

Colin HindWhat’s on the menu these days as Fleetwood Market Cafe opens its doors for business?

Meet new cafe operator Colin Hind. With almost 30 years in the food industry, Colin has acquired a wealth of knowledge and experience which he will now bring to his most recent business venture, Fleetwood Market Cafe. Colin says; “It’s quite simply named Fleetwood Market Cafe – as that’s exactly what it is!”

Fleetwood resident Colin added: “I have been working in the family-run business for 27 years, 17 of them I have been owner of Capricorn Cafe in the seaside town. I’ve worked in the food industry one way or another since leaving school. Starting my career at the North Euston Hotel in Fleetwood as a kitchen porter I then moved onto a supervisory role within a major supermarket. It was at this time that the opportunity arose to buy Capricorn Cafe.

Colin, Julie and Mayor of WyreWhen I found out the market cafe was up for lease I couldn’t let the chance go by. I know the industry very well; I enjoy working with the public and meeting people and I am now keen to expand my career in a busier environment and I can’t wait to become a part of the Fleetwood Market family. We offer a varied menu of breakfasts, toasties, salads and main meals with vegetarian options also provided. Customers can also enjoy a varied selection of fresh cream cakes too. Our first week of trading has exceeded my expectations – we’ve been rushed off our feet and long may it continue.”

Between them they boast 30 years’ experience of engraving all kinds of items; from pint glasses to lighters, bracelets to hairbrushes they can also engrave customers’ own items at very competitive prices.
We caught up with them on their first day of trading……….
Why did you choose Fleetwood Market as a base for your business?
“The indoor setting is a great place to trade as shoppers can enjoy the heated halls whatever the weather. The 4 day a week opening pattern also works well for our business giving us a good balance to fulfil orders from home when the market is closed.”
What’s the best thing about being a market trader?
“We have previous experience at market trading and would definitely say the freedom to be your own boss and making your own decisions is high on our list. We’re proud of our client base too with around 90% of our business coming from returning customers. People travel from Scotland and London to buy gifts for friends, family and for their own business promotions. We’re currently fulfilling an order for a job lot of pint glasses for a Queen’s Park Rangers fan! No two days are the same and that’s what makes the job interesting.”

Skye’s Deli opens its doors at Fleetwood Market

L to R: Dave and Rob of Skye’s Deli

Today marks the dawning of a new era for experienced market trader Rob Brown as he opens “Syke’s Deli” at the seaside shopping experience that is Fleetwood Market……..

“My name is Robert Brown and people who visit the market will know me in my previous role as owner of Market Pet Supplies.

After 10 years with the pet stall I fancied a new business venture before I retire and felt a market deli was something I could get me teeth into, so to speak.

As a fond reminder of my time at the pet stall I chose to name my new business after family pet Skye, our bearded collie dog.

My wife and I are somewhat “afternoon tea aficionados” and this was reason enough to bring a great afternoon tea offer to shoppers at Fleetwood Market aswell as other delicious treats to try. With the help of Wyre Council we have worked together to renovate the unit and it is looking great and we’re excited to get going.
Where possible we source all our produce locally – from breakfasts to lite bites for lunches, cheeses to olives, cakes to coffee there’s lots on offer.

We’ll have new specials each day so there’ll be something to tasty to try every time you visit. Ably assisted by Dave (affectionately referred to as head chef) you’re guaranteed a warm welcome so pay us a visit soon, your business is our pleasure.”
Skye’s Deli is open every market day; Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday year round from 9am – 4.30pm.
