Happy and Healthy HeARTS at Fleetwood Market

IMG_3510
Leading up to this year’s Tram Sunday and Spare Parts festival on Sunday 16 July, Fleetwood Market is hosting a number of exciting arts performances and activities.

The idea is to make the venue a fun, happy and healthy market for traders and shoppers alike. Linking into the Healthier Fleetwood initiative and also being an important strand of the festivals’ access and inclusion programme, arts and creativity is good for the soul and we’d like you to take part.

Linda Copeland will be the artist in residence joining us every Saturday from 17 June encouraging participants to be creative at all ages. Linda is developing an arts installation which involves decorating a crowd of life sized standing statues. Almost twenty local groups and schools have received their figure and once complete the ‘market crowd’ will be shown at the venue and weather permitting, around the town.

Every Thursday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm starting from 15 June (excluding 6 July), come and sing along with the Fylde Ukulele Network. A great way to bop whilst you shop! Mouth-watering afternoon teas will also be available at the market café so you can take full advantage of the entertainment at your leisure.

Local musician Mike Fairclough will be bringing his own brand of folk on Saturday 17 June between 10am and 12pm, and on other days – keep an eye out for the notices at the market.

There is an ongoing “Arts Area” available to have a go at art. We’ll provide lots of paper, templates, crayons and pencils for all the family to use. Especially good for those rainy days in town.

We are also hoping to have creative writing classes, and salsa demonstrations.

On Tram Sunday the market will be buzzing with activity. Internationally acclaimed BMX stunt rider Matti Hemmings will be performing on the outdoor performance area at the market, the fantastically funny Bicycle Ballet and the daring and skilful dance group Etta Ermini are in attendance; plus lots of walkabout street theatre acts and musicians.
There is still time, if you want to get involved in providing creative activities, please contact Chris Wyatt, at chris.wyatt@wyre.gov.uk.

It’s a family affair this Love Your Local Market fortnight at Fleetwood

Unit 191 rotatedFleetwood Market is set for another successful fortnight as Love Your Local Market gets underway (17-31 May). We are pleased to be welcoming six new traders trying their hand at market trading for the first time all offering something different but adding to our extensive range of products on offer at the market.

Michael Taznier joins us selling gothic and mystical gifts. Michael had previously attended car boot sales but when he heard about the offer at Fleetwood Market thought it was definitely worth trying his hand at market trading.

Like father like son, Michael’s son George also joins the market family selling Play Station games and consoles.

Also joining us this Love Your Local Market fortnight is Eric Thompson. Visit his stall for a vast array of handbags and accessories. Eric thought the offer of trading at £10 per day was too good to miss and it was worth a shot at becoming a market trader.

Shaun Casey joins us on 23 May with his range of aromatherapy products whilst Janet Scott is selling her beautiful range of handcrafts doorstops, plaques, cushions and ragdolls. Janet says; “I’ve always wanted to try market trading and this offer has made it so easy to give it a try.”

Father and daughter partnership Patrick Greaves and Charlotte Unsworth join us with their business Little Joy Emporium selling delicious cupcakes and jars of homemade fudge. In search of a retail outlet they discovered the offer for new traders and thought it definitely worth a go.

Pop down and say hello to all our traders – old and new and bag a bargain. For more information on all our traders check out our Facebook page here.

Market Manager Julian Brent says: “The whole point of market trading is to try being self-employed with no pressure. Many large high street businesses like Marks & Spencer started their retail journey on markets.

This year we have offered an easy in easy out offer to take the risk element out of trying market trading.

Fleetwood Market is one of Lancashire’s largest markets hosting 250 indoor and outdoor stalls and is presently operating at over 90 % occupancy. We feel this is a real success story in today’s retail environment.”

Fleetwood Market is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday all year round from 9am – 4.30pm.

Love Your Local Market is a celebration of our market culture here in the UK that happens over a fortnight in May.  Over 900 markets took part last year, putting on over nearly 7,000 events.  LYLM is also all about entrepreneurship and since it started in 2012 the markets industry has pledged over 10,000 pitches to new traders.  Follow the conversation online – #LYLM2017

Easy foot in the door for new Wyre businesses

Remie BrentBudding market traders are being offered discounted stalls in Fleetwood Market to help them get their business off the ground.

As part of its priority to help kick start more new businesses, market owner Wyre Council has joined the Love Your Local Market (LYLM) campaign and will provide up to six successful applicants with discounted pitches of just £10 a day for a 6 month trial.

Love Your Local Market is a national campaign celebrating and supporting British markets and this year runs from 17 to 31 May.

Julian Brent, market manager at Wyre Council, says: “We know there are people out there with exciting business ideas but the uncertainty and cost of getting started, combined with continuity of trade beyond the first year usually proves too daunting. The Love Your Local Market offer is easy in easy out route to business and makes it simpler for anyone to have a go at being self-employed.”

Those market traders who wish to continue trading at the market after this trial period will be encouraged to do so with mentoring and support from the market manager.

Voting is easy – simply enter either “Fleetwood Market” or “Poulton Market” (or submit a vote for each if you are feeling generous) – that’s all it takes, submit your vote HERE.  Voting is open until 31 December.

Markets are at the heart of communities everywhere, but they need more ‘official’ recognition if they are going to get the investments they need and deserve. Help us raise the profile of our markets here in Wyre, after all they provide an excellent economic boost for our area.

Christmas opening times at Fleetwood and Poulton Markets

Christmas Openings 2015We’ve got your Christmas shopping covered at Fleetwood and Poulton markets and we’re looking forward to welcoming visitors from near and far over the festive period.

In addition to our Christmas opening hours we will also be welcoming a very special visitor at Fleetwood Market as he takes up residence in his grotto on selected dates in December. Children can bring their Christmas wish lists and hand them to Father Christmas between 10am and 4.30pm on 5, 12, 19, 22 and 24 December (cost £2 per child).

We also welcome visitors to Fleetwood Market between the 5 and 24 December to help Santa find his lost elves and reindeer. Santa’s sneaky helpers have hidden themselves amongst the stalls at Fleetwood Market – there are 32 elves and 8 reindeer to find. Collect your “finding form” near the gazebo in the main hall and start searching. You can be a super seeker and search for all 32 elves or you can choose to search for 8 elves by picking the shorter form. The reindeer are very shy and have hidden themselves very well…..only the very best seekers will find all 8. We will give you one little hint, the reindeer are only in the main hall. Remember, you have from 9am on Saturday 5 December to 2pm on Thursday 24 December to find them all and help Santa. This is a free event although donations to Fleetwood Market’s Children in Need Appeal will be gratefully received.

All the traders and market staff from Fleetwood and Poulton Markets would like to thank you for your custom and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Fleetwood Market celebrates 175 years as THE seaside shopping experience along the Fylde coast!

Old Market photo2015 marks a very special birthday for Fleetwood Market. Market Rights were first granted in 1275, but it was 1840 before they were exercised by Sir Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood.  The original market area was bound with a stone wall with wooden access gates at each end.  In the middle of the open area was a basic wooden building with a slate roof providing shelter for the stalls from which local people sold farm produce and traders from Manchester sold textiles and clothing. A weekly open cattle market was later added.

Following Sir Peter’s death the market was sold to the town of Fleetwood in 1890.  Two years later the present stone building was erected that included offices and living accommodation for staff.

Over the years further improvements have been made including a major extension in 1990 and the demolition of the police station and magistrates’ court.

Market DayToday the market is as popular as ever, selling a variety of goods from computer accessories to clothing, cosmetics to crockery. Pay a visit to one of our events during the year; some of which include live music acts on our outdoor market, haunting Halloween crafts and Santa’s Grotto during our winter months providing fun for all the family. Keep an eye out for our branded tramcar this year as it trundles along the Fylde coast, we’re proud to be trading all these years later and this is just one of the ways we’re keen to tell people we are open for all your shopping needs. So come and spend a day, not a fortune and bag a bargain at the seaside shopping experience that is Fleetwood Market.
