It’s a family affair this Love Your Local Market fortnight at Fleetwood

Unit 191 rotatedFleetwood Market is set for another successful fortnight as Love Your Local Market gets underway (17-31 May). We are pleased to be welcoming six new traders trying their hand at market trading for the first time all offering something different but adding to our extensive range of products on offer at the market.

Michael Taznier joins us selling gothic and mystical gifts. Michael had previously attended car boot sales but when he heard about the offer at Fleetwood Market thought it was definitely worth trying his hand at market trading.

Like father like son, Michael’s son George also joins the market family selling Play Station games and consoles.

Also joining us this Love Your Local Market fortnight is Eric Thompson. Visit his stall for a vast array of handbags and accessories. Eric thought the offer of trading at £10 per day was too good to miss and it was worth a shot at becoming a market trader.

Shaun Casey joins us on 23 May with his range of aromatherapy products whilst Janet Scott is selling her beautiful range of handcrafts doorstops, plaques, cushions and ragdolls. Janet says; “I’ve always wanted to try market trading and this offer has made it so easy to give it a try.”

Father and daughter partnership Patrick Greaves and Charlotte Unsworth join us with their business Little Joy Emporium selling delicious cupcakes and jars of homemade fudge. In search of a retail outlet they discovered the offer for new traders and thought it definitely worth a go.

Pop down and say hello to all our traders – old and new and bag a bargain. For more information on all our traders check out our Facebook page here.

Market Manager Julian Brent says: “The whole point of market trading is to try being self-employed with no pressure. Many large high street businesses like Marks & Spencer started their retail journey on markets.

This year we have offered an easy in easy out offer to take the risk element out of trying market trading.

Fleetwood Market is one of Lancashire’s largest markets hosting 250 indoor and outdoor stalls and is presently operating at over 90 % occupancy. We feel this is a real success story in today’s retail environment.”

Fleetwood Market is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday all year round from 9am – 4.30pm.

Love Your Local Market is a celebration of our market culture here in the UK that happens over a fortnight in May.  Over 900 markets took part last year, putting on over nearly 7,000 events.  LYLM is also all about entrepreneurship and since it started in 2012 the markets industry has pledged over 10,000 pitches to new traders.  Follow the conversation online – #LYLM2017

Fleetwood Market Manager takes the Plunge for Pudsey!

Children in NeedHe won’t need his wellies but our Market Manager Julian Brent, will be making a splash when he plunges into the Dunk Tank in aid of Children in Need, at Fleetwood Market this Saturday 14 November.

Julian says: “I believe Children in Need is a great charity and some of our thoughtful market traders here at Fleetwood Market recommended that I go in the dunk tank as a good way of fundraising. All we ask is that people donate £1 for the opportunity to do so and help raise money for this fantastic cause.”

People may need to form an orderly queue behind our own market traders but don’t worry – we will make sure you get your chance to dunk the manager! Head down to the seaside shopping experience between noon and 2pm (we couldn’t make him suffer much longer than an hour or two).

There will be entertainment for all the family too from 11am and 2pm with bouncy castle, DJ and special appearances from Peppa Pig and Frozen’s very own Olaf.

We hope to see you there and anyone who captures their own pictures of the dunking, feel free to post these to our Facebook page where we will share them all.

Three new Fleetwood Market retail traders up for national award

An event that celebrates entrepreneurs who have launched a business on one of the nation’s 1,400 markets is taking place in York on Monday, June 9 at The Royal York Hotel.

Run by the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF), the event will attract market traders from all over the UK for a day of inspirational speeches and training workshops with one trader being awarded £2,000.

Dubbed a “Markets Master Class,” the event is part of the NMTF’s market trader start-up scheme, First Pitch, which for 2013/14 has been part-funded by the RBS’s Inspiring Enterprise programme.

The scheme has supported 100 entrepreneurs since June 2013 to start-up and run a markets-based business, offering discounted pitch fees, mentoring from a retail expert and free membership of the NMTF.

Shelley Dixon, 22, of Daisy Daze, trades on Fleetwood Market, Lancashire, run by Wyre Council, and is one the traders supported by First Pitch. Commenting on the scheme, she said:

First Pitch has helped my business go from strength to strength. The advice from my mentor has been extremely valuable and the market manager has also supported me with reduced rent.

“My membership of the NMTF has made me feel secure in my new business and I have no need to worry about liability insurance. Whenever I have a query the NMTF is always there to help.

“Trading makes you learn something new every day. I plan to stay at Fleetwood for the near future as it is a market I feel can grow and change with modern demands of the shoppers here.”

Shelley Dixon - Daisy DazeShelley is one of 35 traders who have made it through their first year on the markets, a success rate for the scheme that has doubled due to the support of the RBS, which awarded £50,000 to the NMTF. Joe Harrison, chief executive of the NMTF, said: “We received an outstanding 350 applications for First Pitch. With low start-up costs, short-term lets and locations in the heart of our country’s towns and cities, this scheme demonstrates that markets are ideal platforms to launch a lean retail business.

“The investment into the scheme from the RBS has proven that with the right network and package of support in place, entrepreneurs have an increased chance of making it through their first year of trading. The NMTF is thankful to the RBS for their trust and faith in the NMTF to be able to deliver the scheme.”

The 35 traders will be joined by markets officials and their mentors. Delegates will be coming to York from all over the country, including traders from markets in London, Birmingham and Newcastle. Support through the scheme was focused on young people aged 18 to 30 and women over 31.

Fleetwood Market celebrates Love Your Local Market

Fleetwood MarketLove Your Local Market (LYLM) is a celebration of our market culture here in the UK that happens over a fortnight in May.  700 markets took part in 2013, putting on over 4,000 events.  LYLM is also all about entrepreneurship and since 2012 the markets industry has pledged around 7,000 pitches to new traders.

In 2013 Fleetwood Market received the most applications for the scheme from all over the UK and as a result three local entrepreneurs established new businesses in the market with support from Wyre Council and a national market trading association.

After twelve months, the traders are still active in Fleetwood Market and all have ambitious plans to expand their businesses.

As part of the 2014 celebration (14 – 28 May), Fleetwood Market is again offering a generous support package for new traders. The campaign has a focus on youth markets and all budding entrepreneurs aged 16 – 20 are offered a reduced rental of £10 per day for an indoor pitch with a discounted rental period of six months on offer thereafter for all new traders who continue trading.

Due to the expected high winds and rain it has been necessary to cancel the Fashion Show that was being held on Saturday 24 May at Fleetwood Market. We are really sorry to all those who were looking forward to this event. Existing traders are not being excluded from the celebrations either, they will be staging a Fashion Show on Saturday 24 May at 12.30pm to showcase the great range of goods currently on sale there.
